FROM THE CHAPLAIN
Spring 2025
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. George’s,
Welcome to St George's and to Venice! Whether you are here for a week or a lifetime, you are welcome at St George's. St George's has the only English service in Venice on Sunday mornings, and we delight in greeting people from all over the world EVERY SUNDAY AT 10.30AM. And when we say welcome - we mean you are welcome to participate in the service, to receive communion if you are hungry for Christ, to sip prosecco with us afterwards, and to get involved with our on-going life together.
It's spring in Venice, the sky is incredibly blue, the water is sparkling, and that unique golden light of Venice suffuses everything. Carnevale is over and we are in the midst of Lent - actually a wonderful time to be here, with less crowding and glorious weather.
Lent means, of course, that we are moving towards Easter. Here's what we are doing at St George's.
Sunday 30 March is Mothering Sunday. We honour and remember all mothers, of course, but we also honour all kinds of mothering that so many people do in different ways. And for those who have lost their mother, are estranged from them, who want to be mothers but cannot, or who are struggling with motherhood - you are in our prayers too.
Holy Week:
13 April - Palm Sunday; We will gather at 10.15 outside the church for the Joint Blessing of the Palms in Campo San Vio with the Clergy and Congregation of the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario (I Gesuati). We continue with a procession into the church and Holy Eucharist.
17 April - Maundy Thursday: Special parish dinner at 6.30pm. We will share a simple meal, wash each other's hands, hear the story of the Last Supper, share communion, strip the altar and leave in darkness. We'll post sign up sheets at the church, or you can email the Chaplain at [email protected]. Bring something to share - bread, cheese, fruit, wine, simple dishes - if you can, but in any case, come!
18 April - Good Friday: Good Friday service 3pm. The church will also be open from 1400-1500 for prayer and meditation, and the Chaplain will be available.
19 April - Holy Saturday: Quiet morning for reflection, 9.30-12.00. Led by the Chaplain. You are welcome to come for all or part of the time.
20 April - EASTER SUNDAY: Festival Holy Eucharist - 10.30 am.
Please note that all Sunday services are at 10.30 am. And note also that we go on Daylight Savings Time early in the morning of Sunday 30 March, so turn your clock ahead or be late to church!
Blessings, Lucinda+
