ALTAR & SANCTUARY RESTORATION APPEAL 2012 - 13
We are maintaining a tradition of Anglican services in Venice going back over 400 years. In 1604-5 the first Church of England chaplain came here to accompany Sir Henry Wotton, King James I's ambassador to the Most Serene Republic.
The permanent Anglican and Episcopalian residents of Venice are too few to maintain what has become a resource for English-speaking Christians worldwide. The life of the English Church here, and its buildings, have been dependent on generous gifts from its visitors, and on its chaplains, who serve without stipend. The Venetian environment is hard on her buildings, and makes constant demands on those who love them to maintain them. Many people gave generously to our 400th anniversary appeal and in consequence the 17th century building that has housed our church since 1892 was made (more or less - this is Venice after all!) wind and weather proof. Greatly improved vestry, kitchen and WC facilities were also facilitated.
Now we have turned our attention to the Church's interior in the hope that the beauty and vitality that a building set aside for the worship of Almighty God ought to proclaim can be returned to that state which clearly our lovely building was designed to provide from its very beginnings as a church.
Since the principal focal point of a church is the table where the Lord meets his people, we have begun with the restoration of the altar and its reredos, including the fascinating picture of Our Lord, with St. Jerome and St. George, presently in the hands of the restorers appointed by the Accademia di Belle Arti. It appears that The reredos is much older than previously thought and shows Florentine influence and possible provenance. The enterprise is costing in the region of €35,000 and by the Grace of God, grants from the municipality and the generosity of many individuals we are two thirds of the way to achieving this figure. However this is only the beginning and once the present work is done, the rest of the Sanctuary and work to the floors and walls of the church will need to be done. Please do help us in this work for the glory of God and for the sake of all who worship at St. George's, both visitors and regulars.
